Its a gas
Back in
September we
were chatting to
the guys on the
Hartge stand
at the Frankfurt show and
discovered that they were
about to tackle a world land
speed record in a modified
1-Series.
Richard Noble
doesn’t need
to be too
concerned
just yet
though: the
Projekt-
V300plus
programme
was aimed at
taking a world
record for LPGfuelled
cars and was
a collaboration between
universities in Saarbrücken
and Kaiserslautern, plus
BMW tuners Hartge.
The idea is to prove the
environmental credentials
of LPG fuel.
Getting Hartge on board
was a smart move by the
boffins: the firm supplied
a 450 bhp V8-powered
1-Series for the project,
using the LPG injected in
liquid rather than gas form.
At the Papenburg highspeed
oval in Northern
Germany, the Hartgemodified
130i stormed to
303.6 km/h (that’s a heady
189 mph) but torrential rain
prevented the required run
in an opposite direction for
an official record.

team’s progress at www.
