Back to basics
The 3-Series convertible might have
grown bigger and heavier with each
generation but chopping the top off
the 1-Series has created a sleek
replacement to the much-loved E30
and E36 models. Comparing the dimensions
shows the 1-Series to be pretty close in size
to the E36 model, too – slightly narrower in
the rear but wider up front and within 8 cm of
its overall length.
Like its Coupe sibling, the Convertible’s
svelte lines are a world away from the
stumpy 1-Series hatch, an achievement
which is partly down to BMW retaining
a traditional fabric roof for the car. As in
previous generations of 3-Series convertible,
the roof folds away under a cover to leave a
smooth profile and the electric option can be
operated at a brisk 25 mph.
The launch line-up runs from the 118i and
120i four-cylinders to the 125i and 135i petrol
sixes, plus the 120d. The 135i is almost a
model in its own right and like the Coupe,
comes as standard with an electronically
locking differential, recalibrated steering
and throttle response, plus a modified
version of the M aerodynamic styling, using
additional vents to give the front end a wider
appearance. At the rear end, a matt black
central diffuser and chrome tailpipes mark
out the 306 bhp range-topper.
Elsewhere, the open 1-Series shares
the various Efficient Dynamics measures
already implemented across the range and
transmission options include six-speed
manual or the new six-speed Steptronic
automatic. The automatic box comes with the
option of shift buttons on the steering wheel,
standard on the 135i.
Expect to find the 1-Series convertible in
UK showrooms this summer. |
