E39 Project Kicks Off
E39 Project Kicks Off It’s harder than you’d think to decide on
a Total BMW project car, so thanks go
to all the readers who emailed in with
their suggestions – ranging from E28
M5s, through classic 2002s to 750i’s.
In the end we settled for what was once
described as the best car in the world - the
E39 5-Series.
Yes, a 523i in Cosmos Black is a long way
from the 400 bhp M5, but the 2.5 engine is
ripe for a bit of tuning work, while the right
styling mods and wheels can transform
the E39.
Not that we'll be getting our hands dirty
just yet though: the car is currently
in the hands of our sister title Car
Mechanics, which means it'll be
their job to sort out the transmission
fluid leak, which appears to be the
only major fault with the £2800
bargain. Otherwise, it seems we've
got ourselves a sound example: a
1998 R-registered example, it comes
with just 78,000 miles and being
the SE spec, comes with cruise and
on-board computer. We've also found
a fully stamped service book.
We’ll be taking the car over this summer,
so in the meantime get hold of the February
and find out how they’re getting on with that
‘lifetime fill’ gearbox. More info at www.carmechanicsmag.co.uk. |
