If you have access to a trailer and a suitable tow car at your disposal, then putting your track car aside for circuit use only will save on tax, monthly car insurance and MOT cost
As there’s a large proportion of you who won’t have that luxury, it’s worth building your E30 accordingly to deal with the rigours of daily use. Our example will be kept road legal so it can be driven to local circuits by those who wouldn’t be comfortable towing. Solid suspension, engine and transmission mounts will do more harm than good, as will a stiff suspension setup. UK readers will realise that our road surfaces aren’t far short of dreadful so the suspension setup will be critical to making the daily drive bearable. A good quality fast road kit will be compliant enough for the commute to work, but it will also be adequate for track use. A roll cage is essential because in the event of putting your E30 on its roof at speed, a good quality roll cage will retain the structure of the shell – potentially saving a life, or two if you are carrying a passenger. Remove the windows from an E30 and it’s possible to flex the roof structure when applying hand pressure, which demonstrates how much rigidity a roll cage could add, and it will also improve handling.
