850i Autobox Oil Change

FebQAoil

Q I have a 1993 850i which I think is due for an oil change for the
automatic gearbox. I’ve been led to believe that these units are
sealed for life but would appreciate your views.

Dennis Carter, email.

A No, these most definitely are not sealed for life, that’s the fivespeed autos used in the 840i. The 850i uses the same four-speed ZF as the 750i E32 and it needs and oil and filter change every Inspection 11 service (or every 30,000 miles). Luckily though this won’t be expensive – the oil is regular Dexron 111 so you’ll need some of that (between three and four litres), a new filter screen (genuine BMW only!) and a new rubber sump gasket.
