Q I have a 1984 A reg 520i and the idle speed and ignition timing is proving to be a nightmare. I can’t get the idle speed to remain constant and setting the timing is just impossible because with the strobe light, the marks keep moving about. I fitted a new idle speed valve as this was all corroded up and cleaned out the coolant supply stub as you suggested, so this is working. Someone has suggested the vacuum capsule on the air box is faulty but I’ve disconnected this to no effect.

Q The washers on my 745iL have just stopped working. I can hear the pump working and water is trickling from one jet only and not enough to get onto the screen. What do you think the problem is?

Q I have a 2003 BMW 320d with a GM auto ‘box. When the car has been standing overnight it seems slip when first put into DRIVE. However if I put it into manual it takes up immediately. Once it has taken up, the ‘box operates faultlessly for the rest of the day, be it either in Drive or Manual. Even in the morning the takeup in reverse is perfect.

I have seen references to this problem on internet forums but no explanation of the cause or remedy. At the moment it is no more than an inconvenience but I would love to know what is causing the problem, what cure there might be, and whether matters are likely to get any worse.

Q I have a 1993 850i which I think is due for an oil change for the
automatic gearbox. I’ve been led to believe that these units are
sealed for life but would appreciate your views.
